OZblu® Blueberry Breeding

Through our unique breeding program (using only natural methods) we have created a range of blueberries that are generally bigger, sweeter, crispier and juicer than the older traditional varieties which are still prevalent in the market.

The varieties that fall under the banner of OZblu® were bred by the innovative Dave and Leasa Mazzardis from Perth in Western Australia. Their shared passion for breeding high quality fruit and vertical management practice is what ultimately led them to establishing their own farm consisting of mainly peaches, nectarines and blueberries. Together they own and manage the highly successful ‘Yanchep Springs’ orchard.

 

Their range of blueberries have exploded exponentially and consist of very low-chill and even evergreen blueberry varieties suitable for climates where winter chilling is limited.

 

Dave and Leasa have focused on developing superior blueberry varieties with incredible success, earning Dave and Leasa much respect in the industry. The blueberries have been bred with the same goal as the OZ Peach and OZ Nectarines, thereby extending the shelf life and making it favourable for sea freight. This means better taste and quality for a longer period of time.

 

OZblu® blueberries are characteristically larger in size, averaging over 20mm in diameter with many as large as 30mm. Dave and Leasa now aim to continually improve flavour, whilst pursuing a crunchy berry that “pops” in your mouth.
